Foundation Seminars
CLA Document
Each first-year student will be a member of a small seminar of 15 students, or a few more if necessary in the first years of the program. Most students will take a Foundation Seminar during the fall semester of their first year; in order to facilitate the participation of departments with heavy service demands in the fall and of students in highly structured programs, some seminars will be offered in the spring semester. Foundation Seminars are designed to cultivate the attitudes, skills, and knowledge necessary for students to benefit maximally from a Bucknell education and to negotiate the complexities of the modern world.
It cannot be expected that each faculty member will be able to incorporate every pedagogical characteristic initially. We anticipate that faculty members will work toward the goal of providing each of these essential foundational characteristics.3 The Foundation Seminar program will incorporate the Freshman Adviser Seminar program and other appropriate first-year courses.

3. The College of Arts and Sciences faculty voted on December 10, 1996, to reaffirm this position regarding the pedagogical goals of Foundation Seminars. Specifically, we decided that faculty teaching Foundation Seminars be encouraged to continue working toward the pedagogical goals rather than expect such faculty to achieve all of these goals.
