Since our first trip in 1999, the Bucknell Brigade has worked performing manual labor to assist with community development efforts in Nueva Vida. Working side by side with residents, volunteers have dug trenches, mixed cement by hand, built walls, put on roofs, installed ceiling and floor tiles, and done minor electrical work.
Students have often remarked about how much they have learned from the skilled craftsmen and laborers who have shown them how to complete tasks such as bending rebar, or pouring a concrete floor. In addition, the physical strength, good humor and patience of our Nica co-workers has been impressive.
To date, Bucknellians have been involved in the following construction projects; building the permanent health clinic, erecting the wall around the clinic compound, and helping with the construction of the volunteer dorm facility, and the women's sewing cooperative.
