The Distribution -- Pedagogical Goals for Disciplinary Breadth Courses

CLA Document

Faculty will be expected to work toward meeting the following goals in their Disciplinary Breadth courses.

  1. Structure courses in such a way as to incorporate active, independent learning, experience of an individual or collaborative nature throughout the course.

  2. Foster students’ ability to analyze and interpret materials they encounter (Texts, performances, works of art, the phenomena of society and nature), to synthesize and communicate the results of their studies, and to create works of their own.

  3. Encourage an awareness of the kinds and limits of knowledge and the historical and cultural context of ideas and events.

  4. Approach topics from more than one perspective (for example, showing differences in perspectives within a discipline, differences among disciplinary approaches, or different cultural perspectives) and help students make the relevant connections.

  5. Include, where possible, the works, research, experience, and perspectives of individuals belonging to groups whose contributions to society have historically been undervalued, e.g., women and members of minority groups.
