Many opportunites are available for Bucknell Civil Engineers to interact with the community, whether it be children, elderly, or otherwise. Assisting others through the use of skills learned during the college years proves to be a rewarding and valuable experience.

Assisting the young engineers with the construction project

Bridge Day for Elementary School Students
Professor Ronald D. Ziemian developed and implemented a one-day short course that educates elementary school children about the engineering profession and specifically structural engineering. The course includes a Powerpoint and video presentation, hands-on assembly of a 25' steel truss bridge, individual construction of small-scale 12" model wood bridges, and distribution of personalized certificates. Since 1997, over 200 first and second graders at Kelly Elementary School in Lewisburg, PA have participated. Working along side-by-side with Professor Ziemian, many Bucknell civil engineering students have contributed to the fun and success of this program.
