Handling Procedures

Preserving Valuable Resources

Many items in our collections are irreplaceable. Patrons are asked to assist in the preservation of valuable resources by adhering to the procedures outlined below:

• Please do not bring food or beverages into the Reading Room
• Use pencils to take notes
• Avoid placing any items on materials, except the book weights provided
• Adjust book supports to protect covers and spines from damage
• Guard against staining paper by contact with moisture and natural oils on hands
• Hold photographs and loose sheets by the edges
• Turn pages carefully to avoid tears
• Maintain order of materials in folders or boxes
• Be aware that most materials are too fragile to be photocopied
