Bucknell HistoryDigital Image CollectionIntroduction to the Collection | | The Bucknell History Collection is a database of digital images and other artifacts related to the history of the university. While originally conceived as a repository to store and provide access to the growing number of digital images related to the university’s history, the collection has also supported various campus efforts. In 2005, the university was the recipient of a Getty Foundation Campus Heritage Grant. The funds were awarded to make recommendations for preserving the architectural history of the university. A team of faculty, staff, and students have been working alongside of architectural consultants. One of their main tasks is to examine the exteriors of a core group of campus buildings and how they have changed over the past hundred years. The team has heavily depended upon the use of photographs of the exteriors of these buildings. | By digitizing and cataloging these materials, more users – and remote users – are able to access these materials. Furthermore, a number of interesting observations have occurred due to the ability to zoom in on small details barely visible in the printed photographs. These details are visible in Insight on images that were scanned at a high resolution. Currently, the collection contains over 2,000 images and is steadily growing on a monthly basis. Images are restricted to Bucknell faculty, staff, and students, although future plans include a publicly-available subset of images related to the early history of the university. The Bucknell History Collection was created with support from a number of departments and individuals. University Archives provided access to materials and detailed information about the artifacts. Assistant Education Professor Russ Dennis provided countless hours reviewing data, suggesting changes and improvements, and helping us to identify details in photographs. Professor Dennis was the first Bucknell faculty member to use Insight in a live presentation, and he was also one of our first faculty members to use Insight in the classroom. ISR student assistants took on the scanning responsibilities, and the Digital Initiatives Group provided overall project guidance and technical support. | Viewing Tools | The collection is viewable through Insight software. The collection is currently restricted to members of the Bucknell community. Upon request, a subset of images from the collection can be made available. Contact Abby Clobridge (aclobrid@bucknell.edu) for details. | Metadata Schema | The metadata schema used was loosely based on a combination of Dublin Core and locally-created databases. | Access | Click here to access the collection via the Insight web browser.
