Dance Minor Requirements

The minor in dance is structured as follows:

Theory Requirements (three course credits)

  • DANC 250: History of Dance
  • DANC 262: Dance Composition

And either:

  • THEA 246: Scene Design
  • THEA 248: Lighting Design
  • THEA 251: Costume Design
  • or another THEA, ART or MUSC course subject to approval by dance faculty.

Technique Requirements (three course credits/six half-credit courses)

The curriculum acknowledges studio training as paramount to the field of study, offering classes in a variety of dance styles, with an emphasis on proficiency in both ballet and modern techniques.

Students pursuing the minor will take two 300 level ballet courses and two 300 level modern courses. The following technique classes are repeatable in recognition of the importance of consistent and individualized training at the appropriate level:

  • DANC 325: Ballet Technique II - half credit
  • DANC 350: Ballet Technique III - half credit
  • DANC 310: Modern Dance Technique II - half credit
  • DANC 315: Modern Dance Technique III - half credit

In addition, students may select a minimum of two elective courses from the following list:

  • DANC 230: Jazz Dance Technique I - half credit
  • DANC 330: Jazz Dance Technique II - half credit
  • DANC 300: Art of Chinese Watersleeve - half credit
  • DANC 263: World Dance and Culture - half credit
  • DANC 355: Pointe and Variations - half credit
  • DANC 265: Dance of Eastern Europe - half credit

Performance

Students minoring in dance are expected to participate in dance productions throughout their Bucknell career. Performance and choreographic opportunities include participation in either the Dance Showcases or Bucknell Dance Company Concerts. and choreographic opportunities include participation mainstage and showcase concerts in the Harvey M. Powers Theatre, Weis Center for the Performing Arts, Tustin Studio Theatre, and alternative spaces. Weekly, semester-long rehearsals and guest artist residencies for dancers of every level provide opportunities to learn original choreographies, classic reconstructions, and cultural forms.
