Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Program Overview

The College of Engineering typically has many students doing research each summer. Student participants in summer research usually receive a stipend (currently $2,500) that is provided by a variety of sources, including research grants to individual faculty, University funds, departmental grants from state and federal agencies, private foundations, and corporations. While all engineering students complete senior design projects during the academic year, students of electrical and mechanical engineering obtain the powerful discovery experience provided by actually fabricating a working prototype of their designs. The Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Departments budget roughly $100 per student for this valuable undertaking.

The electrical engineering department has received a grant of $10,000 from Rockwell in support of undergraduate research in electrical engineering. The grant supported four research projects conducted by five students and four professors. The department goals are to secure funding for undergraduate research to provide opportunities for every student who wishes to participate. Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. has contributed funding for future research support.

A generous grant from the Wright-Bentley Foundation enables Bucknell University to celebrate the contributions of engineering students for "Engineering Dean's Awards for Distinguished Service and Scholarship."

GE Faculty for the Future Program at Bucknell

The General Electric Fund has awarded the College of Engineering a grant to support GE's FACULTY FOR THE FUTURE program in the area of Undergraduate Research. This grant provides an opportunity for women and minority students to work during the summer with engineering faculty on the development of multimedia courseware for use in the College's electronic classrooms. By working with these faculty on teaching-related projects, the GE Fund hopes that these research activities might encourage the students to consider careers as a teacher/scholar in higher education. The grant was expanded by the Engineering college to also include a limited number of traditional students who have a possible interest in the teaching profession. http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~gen-elec
