Physics Department Summer Research

Program Overview

The Bucknell Physics Department is particularly proud of the opportunities it provides for undergraduate participation in ongoing faculty research. In the years 1998-2002 16 different undergraduates appeared as co-authors with Physics Department faculty members on articles published in scientific journals (or articles submitted for publication). During the same period 20 additional papers with undergraduate co authors have been presented at national meetings of the American Physical Society and the American Astronomical Society, often with students attending the meeting and delivering the presentation.

The Physics Department has 11 permanent faculty with research interests in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Biophysics (Experiment), Pattern Formation and Chaos (Experiment), Atomic Physics (Experiment), Quantum Optics (Theory), Gravitation (Theory), Condensed Matter Physics (Computer Simulation), Elementary Particle Physics (Experiment), and Statistical Physics (Theory).

Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program

Some student research is conducted as a part of the Department's summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. Most of the funding for this program comes from the National Science Foundation, but additional support comes from individual investigator grants held by department faculty, and from the University. This program funds about ten students each summer to work for ten weeks on a project in physics or astronomy with a department faculty member. Students are selected from throughout the country, and about four students from Bucknell are funded each year.

(The Physics Department has hosted an REU site since 1996, and the current NSF grant runs through the summer of 2005.) Students also work off campus at Fermi National Accelerator Lab with a department member who conducts her research there.

Research can also be done during the school year for academic credit, or as a part of the Bucknell Honors Program.
