Certification Areas
Areas of preparation for Certification
Those seeking to teach the following must have the equivalent of a BA or BS in the content area or as noted. Specific requirements for certification in either primary or secondary areas of certification and suggested sequences for some combinations are available. Some areas of certification require dual certification as noted below. The second area of certification may have fewer requirements than the primary area of certification. Some areas of certification can only be primary areas.
- Elementary (K-6) (must be a primary area of certification)
- Early Childhood (B - 3) (must be a primary area of certification)
- Art (K-12)
- Biology (7-12)
- Chemistry (7-12)
- Citizenship requires a major in History, Geography, Political Science or Economics (7-12)
- Communications requires a major in English,Theatre or Education (7-12)
- Earth and Space Sciencerequires a major in in Geology (7-12)
- English (7-12)
- Environmental Education (K-12) (requires dual certification: either a BA in Environmental Studies with a primary certifcation in another area or a BS in Environmental Studies with secondary certification in Biology)
- Foreign Language (K-12)

-German
-Latin requires a major in Classics
-Russian
-Spanish - General Science (requires dual certification with a primary certification in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, or Physics)
- Mathematics (7-12) (only available as a primary certification area)
- Music (K-12) (only available as a primary certification area and requires a Bachelor of Music Degree)
- Physics (7-12)
- Social Studies requires a major in History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, or Psychology (7-12)
