Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
Course Description:
Cultural anthropology (CA) is the study of human diversity as well as the various analytical tools (i.e. theories and methods) available to make sense of this diversity. Our guides will be texts, films, and class discussions that use diverse theories and methods to identify both the local and the global dimensions of economics, politics, ethnicity, kinship, religion, art, and social etiquette.
Course Goals:
To introduce you to the discipline of anthropology and to the study of culture within that discipline.
To explore what cultural anthropologists do (i.e. methods) and what kinds of theories they use to understand the diverse practices, beliefs, and conditions they encounter in the field.
To examine how these theories might explain our own life experiences.
