For over 20 years, Bucknell University has had a Slide Library to support the Art and Art History faculty . This facility was recently remodeled, and along with this physical expansion also came a new vision for the facility. It was rechristened the Visual Resource Center, and the Slide Librarian given the new title of Visual Resources Curator, now a full-time position.
A very cursory inventory of the collections produced an estimate of approximately 75,000 slides. This includes a large Western Art Collection (around 40,000 slides) arranged by artist, an Architecture Collection of approximately 20,000 slides, an Asian Art Collection, a Pre-Columbian Collection, an Islamic Art Collection, and a Reference Collection.
We have been adding to our collection at a rate of over 7,000 slides annually, both through purchases and copy stand photography. Since 1995, all new additions to the collection have also been entered into our ACCESS database. A concerted effort has been made over the past 2 years to add older slides from the collection to the database as well. As of Mar of 2004, over 35,500 slides have been added to the database.
Slides for 6 courses have been scanned and made available on the Bucknell intranet. Another body of digital images purchased from Saskia is available through the Bertrand Library/ISR. Bucknell has yet to make the leap to scanning all our slides, but there is some discussion of the need for our collection to be more accessible digitally. Scanned images may be more readily available in the near future.
In addition to the Visual Resources Curator, the Visual Resource Center relies on student assistants to run smoothly.
