Since 1999, when a group of volunteers spent their spring break providing emergency relief efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Mitch, the university has been involved in a unique partnership with a resettlement community outside the capital city of Managua, Nicaragua. Volunteers involved in this student-initiated service-learning project help raise money for the free health clinic in Nueva Vida, a facility largely built with donations raised by the Bucknell Brigade. Delegations of students and staff bring donated medicines, inventory supplies in the pharmacy, and assist with manual labor on projects identified by the Center for Development in Central America, our host agency, while learning about micro-enterprise initiatives, grass roots development, the history, and culture of Nicaragua.

The Bucknell Brigade is a unique opportunity to participate in an international service-learning program. True service-learning is comprised of three elements; preparation, action, and reflection. Throughout the academic year, there are various means of preparing students for the experience, including mini-curriculum sessions and participating in various service-oriented fundraising programs on campus and in the surrounding community. The action portion of this program involves physically traveling to Nicaragua to translate, build, interact, see, taste, and smell the country and culture of Nicaragua. Reflection is done throughout the service-learning experience and continues when students return to campus. The program sends two student delegations to Nicaragua during the academic year. Additionally, there is the opportunity for students to participate in an intensive summer program.
