Study Abroad

Bursting with history and culture, Berlin is one of the most fascinating cities in Europe. Located in north-eastern Germany, it provides endless opportunities to experience German culture, while also serving as a connecting point between East and West. The IES Berlin program introduces students to the rich heritage of the city in many ways. In conjunction with Humboldt Universität, IES offers a broad range of courses for students to make the most of the study abroad experience. The greatest aspect of IES Berlin is the homestay program. This is an excellent arrangement because it increases the interaction with the culture, as well as fosters a personal relationship with a German.
My time in Berlin was a memorable experience. I am an International Relations and German double major, so my classes concentrated on language and politics. I also interned at the Checkpoint Charlie Stiftung for 5 weeks after classes ended. This was a good way to get more involved in Berlin and German culture, and was an excellent experience for the future. Each day was something new– there was never a dull moment. I did my fair share of traveling (mostly east), but because the city has so much to offer it was never necessary to leave to find something to do. I lived with a single woman and her daughter in Prenzlauer Berg, formerly part of East Berlin. Submersing myself in the culture like this provided many opportunities to participate in the lifestyle and witness firsthand their traditions. I recommend the IES program in Berlin to anyone who wants to experience city life and the German culture.
