Department Collections
During the time that the Geology Department has been in existence, we have accumulated collections of rocks, minerals, maps and other items that have been used in teaching and research. These collections continue to grow through purchases, faculty and student contribution, and donations from friends of the Geology Department.
| Department Collections: |
| Igneous and Metamorphic Suites - We maintain a collection of over 100 igneous and metamorphic petrographic suites, many with thin sections. Sedimentary Structures Collection - these are fine examples of primary sedimentary structures that have been collected by Dr. Edward Cotter. They are used heavily in the Sedimentology and 100-level courses. The Structure Collection - This is an outstanding collection of a wide variety of Rock Structures, largely collected by Dr, Richard Nickelsen and now continued by Dr. Mary Beth Gray. Many samples have thin sections.
Museum-Quality Minerals - maintained by Dr. Jack Allen, this collection focuses on the habits and properties of crystals. 2 Student Mineral Study Collections - students have the opportunity to study many examples of minerals: a collection of quality specimens (for observation only) and another set of minerals as they commonly occur (for physical tests). Crystal Lattice Models - approximately 50 lattice models are available for use in our Mineralogy and Geochemistry courses. 100-level Rock Collection - This is a collection of over 60 igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock examples for our 100-level labs. We collect at least 25 of each sample and have multiple thin sections of many of these rock types. Recent Sands Collection - Nearly 100 examples of sands from around the world, this collection seems to grow in size as students come back from Spring Break! |

Department Map Collection - Topographic, Geologic and special Theme maps are used heavily in our teaching and research and purchased as needed. A large collection of USGS series maps is also maintained and is constantly growing. Planetary Images on CD - Dr. Craig Kochel is a Principal Investigator in Mars research and maintains a large collection of planetary images on CD for his teaching and research. Geology Department Library - through the thoughtful donation by several organizations and individuals, we maintain a small geological library in the Carnegie Building. Bucknell's Bertrand Library has a very large collection of geology-specific books and periodicals, and subscribes to several extensive online (internet) research sites. |
