Computer Facilities

The faculty and staff in the Geology Department constantly strive to stay abreast of the current advances in technology for their teaching and research activities. Our department maintains a private student computer lab with 18 PC/Mac computers, flatbed and slide scanners, a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer and 5000PS 42" color plotter. A wide variety of software is available for all students and staff including Microsoft Office; Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver; Mathematica; SPSS and Stella, to name just a few. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is taught in-house by our faculty using ArcGIS software in our computer lab.

In addition to our computer lab, each classroom and teaching lab has an instructor/multimedia station, a ceiling-mounted data projector, and high-speed access to the University network and the internet.

Each faculty research lab has at least one computer dedicated to that faculty member and his or her students. Students can access the campus network both through standard network ports, and through Bucknell's wireless network that has recently been completed throughout the campus.

The use of computers in the field is common, and many of our upper-level courses use laptops to gather and analyze data in the field.  In the photo to the right,  a student uses a laptop computer to acquire data during a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey at our Geophysical Research Site.

Our department maintains two laptop computers for use in the classroom, field exercises, and student/faculty research.

If we don't have something, it is probably available on campus. ISR maintains a technology courtyard, with a wide variety of computing, printing, slide-making, scanning and video-editing equipment. Laptops, digital still and movie cameras, and a variety of other presentation equipment are available for sign-out to all faculty and students.
