Mary A. DeCredico, Provost

Bucknell is a university grounded in the liberal arts tradition where the strengths of liberal arts and professional programs complement and support each other to create new possibilities in teaching, scholarship, and learning. The college-like university claim is real. Bucknell combines the size, curricular choices, and extracurricular opportunities of a comprehensive university with personal attention to students. Student engagement in the campus community and in their own learning characterize a liberal arts college.

Bucknell’s faculty members are passionate, dedicated teachers and scholars. Excellent teaching is demonstrated by the dynamic lectures, innovative, and continuous professional development of Bucknell’s faculty.

Teaching is of paramount importance at Bucknell, informed and energized by rigorous individual scholarship. The internal scholarly dialogue – posing questions, gathering and analyzing information, and reaching conclusions – is also the dialogue by which faculty and students, both individually and collaboratively, build knowledge, and cultivate understanding.

At Bucknell, teaching and scholarship are integral elements of the same intellectual activity – the life of the mind. Bucknell is one of a very limited subset of institutions in the nation that have high expectations for both teaching and scholarship of its faculty and that challenge students to participate in rigorous research as part of the learning process.

I am especially pleased to highlight the most recent recipients of the Faculty Teaching Awards.
