Ancient and Modern Landscapes of Conflict and Peace

Bucknell in Northern Ireland at Grianan, 2009

Bucknell in Northern Ireland '09 Grianan

This is a short-term (3.5 weeks) study-abroad program for students interested in studying social conflict and peace-building. Students learn about the conflict in Northern Ireland ("the Troubles") by means of coursework and intensive cultural immersion.

The program is designed to maximize opportunities to interact and work with people in Derry/Londonderry ("L'Derry") via service-learning placements in voluntary sector (non-profit) organizations. Students gain an appreciation for the culture, history, geography, and politics of the country.

This program is a collaboration between Bucknell and INCORE (International Conflict Research; a joint project of the University of Ulster and the United Nations University). It involves educational, service-learning, and research opportunities through the Magee campus of the University of Ulster in L'Derry.

Two Bucknell faculty co-directors lead the student group, providing orientation during the spring semester, and direction throughout the three-and-a-half week program.
