What is Google Scholar?

Google Scholar is a database of research material that is searched using the Google interface. It contains information that is freely available online as well as information that requires a subscription.

The research material searchable in the Google Scholar search engine is available to you because Google Scholar and a publisher have come to an agreement. Not every publisher has agreed to let Google Scholar search it's holdings and not all material from any particular publisher may be listed in Google Scholar. Because of this arangement Google Scholar is NOT comprehensive, complete or necessisarily current on any given subject.

Google Scholar allows current Bucknellians access to material Bertrand Library subscribes to through Bucknell's "Electronic Journals" service (http://rk8jj2el6n.search.serialssolutions.com/). Through its connection to this service Google Scholar is able to determine if Bucknell has access to the retrieved item. If the item is available, Google Scholar will display a "Get Item at Bucknell" link next to it.

  • If the item is a book, clicking on "Get Item at Bucknell" will take you to a page that has a link to the library catalog. Clicking on the library catalog link will take you to the library catalog's record for the item.
  • If the item is a journal article, clicking on "Get Item at Bucknell" will take you to a page that has links to the database that may provide the full text of the article.

 

In order to use Google Scholar to search Bucknell's resources you must first set your preferences.

First, click on "Scholar Preferences" on the Google Scholar main page.

Next, in the "Institutional Access" section, type in "Bucknell" in the space provided and click on "Find Institution".

Next, select the box next to "Bucknell". A check mark will appear in the box.

Finally, Click on "Save Preferences" to save your actions and return to the Google Scholar main page.
