Bucknell announces Gold Mathematics Competition winners

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Bucknell University department of mathematics has announced the winners of the 32nd Annual John Steiner Gold High School Mathematics Competition.
One hundred and eleven students from 31 high schools participated in the competition held at Bucknell March 18.
Top team honors went to Radnor High School (Radnor), which was represented by seniors Jay Ni and Dan Schwartz and junior Huaou Yan. Parkland High School (Allentown) placed second and Hershey High School (Hershey) finished third. Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School and Cumberland Valley High School received honorable mention.
Individual honors were awarded to:
Ameya Velingker, a junior at Parkland High School, who placed first.
three Radnor High School students who took individual honors: junior Huaou Yan placed second, senior Jay Ni placed third, and senior Dan Schwartz finished fifth.
David Renshaw, a senior from Mechanicsburg Area High School, took fourth place.
Students have two hours to work 36 problems which, according to Greg Adams, associate professor of mathematics at Bucknell, "tend to be trickier than most standard high school problems, but often they yield to clever insights.
"The median this year was nine correct problems. Amazingly, one student got all 36 correct and seven students scored 30 or better," he said.

The Professor John Steiner Gold Mathematics Competition is sponsored by Bucknell in memory of the late John Steiner Gold.
A native of Turbotville, Gold taught at several area high schools before joining the faculty at Bucknell, where he served with distinction for nearly half a century.
In the spirit of his life-long work, this competition was established to discover and to encourage mathematical talent. The competition is open to all area high schools, public and private. Each school may enter up to three students, who will compete for both team and individual prizes.
