Jack Filer played three years of varsity football and basketball, co-captained the 1936 football team with Hall of Famer Stu Smith and, as a sophomore, was the starting right end on the team that played in the inaugural Orange Bowl game on January 1, 1935 (a 26-0 win over Miami). Filer was selected to the College All-Star team that played against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, and from 1937 until his retirement in 1967 was employed by the U.S. Steel Corporation.
