Is Graduate Study For You?

Have you seriously considered why you really want to go to graduate or professional school?

Perhaps you would like to acquire in-depth knowledge about a particular subject such as law or medicine or the social sciences. Whatever the reasons may be, carefully evaluate whether you have the desire and discipline to carry you through a demanding program. Remember, graduate work requires great energy, time, and financial commitments.

Be clear on your motives. Are you exploring an interest with a passion and/or intending to better prepare yourself for a specific career? Graduate school will not give you the answer if you are seeking career direction. You need to have a direction prior to applying in order to carry yourself through the admissions process and the demanding curriculum.

An MBA or Ph.D. is not an automatic ticket to job opportunities. At some point you will need to define how you want to contribute to the world of work. You also need to look beyond the commonly held beliefs about what a degree will do for you. In answering the question, "Is graduate study for me?", take time to: self-evaluate, develop goals, research the program & research the job market.
