Schlosser to Discuss "Dark Side of Fast Food"

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Investigative reporter Eric Schlosser will give the talk, "Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal," Monday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Trout Auditorium of the Vaughan Literature Building at Bucknell University.
The lecture, which is open to the public without charge, is part of the Science, Technology and Society Series at Bucknell, sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and several other Bucknell offices and departments.
A correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly since 1996, Schlosser is the author of the national best-sellers Fast Food Nation and Reefer Madness, the latter of which deals with the illegal drug trade and pornography. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone and The New Yorker.
In Fast Food Nation, Schlosser reveals how fast food has been a revolutionary force in American life, transforming our diet as well as our economy, workforce and popular culture.
"The book reveals the inner workings of the fast food industry, from the appalling conditions in the American meat-packing plants to the `flavor industry' along the New Jersey Turnpike that gives fast food its taste," said Kim Daubman, associate professor of psychology at Bucknell and faculty coordinator for the series.
The book has been translated into more than 20 languages and reached number one on The Chronicle of Higher Education's list of `What They're Reading on College Campuses."
Schlosser's next book will explore the question, "How does the land of the free come to have the largest prison population in the history of the world?"
The series will continue in the spring semester with two more talks: Bucknell biology professor Gary Sojka will lead a panel discussion of concentrated animal feeding operations on March 8; and John Ikerd will examine sustainable food economics on April 5.
