LEWISBURG, Pa. — The best-seller Night of the Silver Stars: The Battle of Lang Vei, by William R. Phillips, treasurer of Bucknell University, has appeared in paperback, printed by St. Martin's Press.
Night of the Silver Stars wasoriginally published by the Naval Institute Press in 1997, and chosen as a main selection of the Military Book Club in 1998, becoming a club best-seller.
Phillips served nine years as an enlisted man and officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, including 12 months in combat in Vietnam.
He has written numerous articles about military history which have been published in such periodicals as Behind the Lines (The Journal of Special Operations Combat) and MHQ - The Quarterly Journal of Military History. He also has written two as-yet unpublished adventure novels.
A graduate of Milton High School, he taught social studies there from 1968-69. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Penn State, and has taken post-graduate work in history from the University of Virginia, Bloomsburg University, Kings College and the University of Maryland's Far East division.
Prior to joining the administration at Bucknell in 1988, Phillips had a 20-year career in trust and investment banking, retiring as a vice president of Mellon Bank in State College. He served as chairman of the board of directors for the former Commonwealth Bank South (now Sovereign Bank) for four years, and as chairman of the Western Valley board of directors for Keystone Financial Bank before its merger with M&T Bank. Since the merger he has been an advisory board member of M&T Bank's Susquehanna division based in Williamsport.
