LEWISBURG, Pa. — The department of theatre and dance at Bucknell University will present the play, "Spring Awakening," a provocative drama of sexual discovery by Frank Wedekind, Oct. 27, 28, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. in the Harvey M. Powers Theatre, Coleman Hall.
Directed by Bob Gainer and presented for mature audiences only, this play about adolescent sexuality was written in 1891 and banned for many years. Considered a masterpiece of German expressionism, the tragedy reveals how children struggle against the hypocrisy and repression within their families and bourgeois society.
"We are proud to present this drama as a collaboration with our students, faculty and guest artists, via a multi-media use of theatre, film, and imaginative design," said Gainer.
Production includes original musical score
This performance is special in many ways, says Gainer. "The production will include an original musical score composed by Bucknell senior music major Andrew Burnson, and played live by a string quartet.
"The play features an integration of filmed scenes by alumni filmmakers Juliana Brafa '05 and her creative partner, Todd Bieber, and live stage action by 30 performers, including several members of the Bucknell faculty.
"Our multi-media version of "Spring Awakening" will provide a visual feast of highly inventive design by Elaine Williams (sets), Paula Davis-Larson (costumes) and Heath Hansum (lighting)," said Gainer.
Performance highlight of Parents Weekend
The performance is part of the university's annual Parents Weekend celebration, so tickets may be limited for the Friday and Saturday night performances.
All seats in the Harvey M. Powers Theatre are reserved; tickets are $8, and $6 for senior citizens and Bucknell students with IDs. Individual tickets are available at the Weis Center Box Office, 570-577-1000, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or online at www.bucknell.edu/Boxoffice.xml; in the Elaine Langone Center Box Office from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on the night of the performance at the Powers Theatre in Coleman Hall beginning one hour before the curtain rises.
