 Excerpts from Volume 138, Number 7; Oct. 13, 2006 Theatre department to perform banned play uncensored
By Kimberly Kane Arts & Entertainment EditorThe department of theatre and dance will perform “Spring Awakening” Oct. 27-30 in the Harvey M. Powers Theatre. The play has been banned and censored since its creation in 1891 and will be performed uncensored. The drama focuses on adolescent sexuality and the repressive nature of society. While it may not sound like a performance to which you would take your parents for Parents’ Weekend, the relationship between parents and children is at the heart of the play. The theatre department hopes to spark discussion. “The play is a children’s tragedy,” said Robert Gainer, associate professor of theatre. “They suffer in a world of repression.” Jean Peterson, associate professor of English, served as the dramaturge for “Spring Awakening.” A dramaturge is a research resource, or a scholar of drama, who provides background for the play.
