Connecting
Establishing relationships with fellow Bucknell alums is essential for building and developing your network. However, asking that alum for a job is a good way to hinder a relationship, not build one.
Think of this process as connecting, rather than conducting a transaction.
Consider your bank. To withdraw money you can use the ATM or interact with a teller. Both provide the same outcome, but if you apply for a loan, having a relationship with a teller can be helpful, whereas the ATM will do nothing for you. That's why information interviewing is the ultimate networking technique.
Here's a startling statistic: One out of every 200 resumes (some studies put the number as high as 1,500 resumes) results in a job offer. One out of every 12 informational interviews, however, results in a job offer. Considering that the purpose of informational interviewing is to build relationships, job offers are often a nice side benefit.
