"The Nature of Miracles in Early Irish Saints' Lives"

John Carey
University College Cork
John Carey’s work on early Irish narratives has focused in part on ways in which indigenous Irish culture synthesized Christian and Classical notions of nature, with relevance to current cultural debates in the West on the environment. The view of a “natural supernatural” realm encompassing both human life and the physical environment, as seen in early Irish Otherworld stories and hagiography, has become a rich field of study for Carey, whose mastery of both philological and theoretical approaches has made him a rare contributor to current discussions of nature from the area of medieval studies. He is in the Early and Medieval Irish Department at University College Cork.
