Why Bucknell?

"I wanted a college where I could study music and engineering. At first, I looked at conservatories and their affiliated universities. But it would have been difficult to go back and forth between two different schools to pursue a double major. Bucknell offered both music and engineering and it was easy to incorporate my studies here. I'm on a five-year program and the faculty is very supportive. Their perspective is if you want to do it and you can do it, then go for it. They always open themselves up to you because they want you to learn as much as you can. One of the main reasons I chose Bucknell was the encouragement of the music professors and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere at my audition. When I met my piano professor, Barry Hannigan, the way he talked about style and technique was great - it was a perfect match."

Electrical Engineering

"I wasn't sure which type of engineering I wanted to focus on, so I took EG100 to sample different disciplines. I absolutely loved the electrical side. You design your own project and wire it up, and it's fun. We do a lot of small-group work, which helps learning concepts in a different way. Students here are competitive, but supportive, too. For a recent project in my microcontrollers class, my group built a futuristic house that incorporated lessons from the entire course. I learned the most I've ever learned in that class because we were free to run with ideas and did everything ourselves."

Music

"There are many opportunities to follow personal interests at Bucknell. As a sophomore, I decided to do a piano recital - not for a requirement, but just because I wanted to do one. I put together a mixed classical program, practiced 20 hours a week outside of class, and posted performance flyers around campus. I'm also involved in Gamelan, an Asian percussion group."

Ultimate Frisbee team

"I'm a member of Bucknell's Ultimate Frisbee team. We play club teams and travel to four or five tournaments in the Northeast each semester. Because it's a club sport, daily practice is encouraged but not mandatory. So, if I have a big assignment and need to skip a practice, that's okay. Our team is a bunch of guys - many engineers - who enjoy playing just to play, and it makes it a lot more fun."
