Mathematics Secondary Teacher Certification

Students majoring in mathematics with a special interest in teaching at the secondary school level can earn Pennsylvania Secondary Teacher Certification by 1) selecting their 200 and 300-level electives appropriately, 2) taking courses in the Education Department, and 3) satisfying state minimums on the PRAXIS exam.

 Required Mathematics Courses for Certification

  • MATH 201 Calculus I (or equivalent)
  • MATH 202 Calculus II (or equivalent)
  • MATH 207 Teaching of Math in Secondary School (Junior/Spring)
  • MATH 211 Calculus III
  • MATH 213 Linear Algebra
  • MATH 240 Discrete Mathematics** (.5 credit/Spring)
  • MATH 280 Logic, Sets, and Proofs
  • MATH 303 Probability
  • MATH 307 Statistical Design of Scientific Studies
  • MATH 308 Introduction to Real Analysis I
  • MATH 320 Introduction to Algebra
  • MATH 335 Geometry (Fall)

Required Education Courses for Certification

  • EDUC 101 Social Foundations
  • EDUC 201 Educational Psychology
  • EDUC 240 Literacy and Learning***
  • EDUC 334 or 335 Adolescent Development
  • EDUC 359 Student Teaching: Secondary (3 credits)
  • EDUC 459 Professional Seminar in Secondary Education
                    (concurrent with EDUC 359)

Other Notes for Certification

  • One English Literature and one writing (W1) course required
  • Pre-CIP Application
  • Student Teaching Application by December 15 of Junior Year
  • PRAXIS Exams taken by January of Senior Year
