Tech Desk support levels for student computers

The Bison Laptop program strives to offer the best possible technical support for students who participate in it. In order to provide this premium level of support, we need to differentiate between the support that we can offer to participants and the support that we can offer to students who choose another make or model.

Whether you have a Bison Laptop or not, you should buy and use an external hard drive and back up your data!

We have 3 levels of support for student computers:

  • Bison Laptops - Dells
  • Bison Laptops - Apples
  • Non Bison Laptop PCs

  • Loaner laptops for repairs that need to be sent to Apple

What you can expect at the Tech Desk with other makes and models

We always support every computer that a student brings to the Tech Desk, and there is never any charge for hardware or software support. This includes support for virus removal, malware infestations, software installation, file transfer, software assistance, backing up of personal data on external hard drives, etc.

However, if extreme hardware issues persist, requiring operating system reinstallation or parts ordering:

  • We can reinstall and update the operating system
  • You will need to contact the manufacturer and arrange for delivery of parts
  • You will need to work out support issues with the manufacturer
  • Bison Laptop machines will take priority in the service queue

Steps to take if you decide not to purchase a Bison Laptop

  • Buy an external hard drive and back up all of your data on a regular basis!
  • Read online how to back up and restore your music in iTunes.
  • Plan ahead for a hardware disaster - we have seen them on every make and model of laptop.

If you buy a Mac, invest in both an external hard drive and an iSkin to cover your keyboard against spills. Use Time Machine to manage your back up!
