 Excerpts from Vol. 139, No. 10; Apr. 13, 2007Economics major surge at UniversityBy Kelly McGaw Contributing WriterApproximately 17 of the 147 applicants to the economics major in the Class of 2009 were denied acceptance this year. According to Robert Midkiff, associate dean for academic affairs, the major cap in the economics department has been in place for over six years, but this is the first time that it has been implemented. Midkiff said that this year the economics department had “more applications than we really could accommodate” forcing the department to find “the most appropriate mix of students who have some talent for economics and also are sincerely motivated to study it.” The economics department has a soft cap of about 100 to 125 students per class year. Students interested in the economics major must submit an application either in the fall or spring of their sophomore year. The application includes an essay describing what the applicant has found most interesting about his or her economics courses as well as the student’s academic progress report. ( read full article )
