Bob Woodward reflects on the 'bubble' and beyond

People can be divided into two categories—those that find work they love, even if they must push and switch jobs until they find something they like, and those who don’t. There is nothing like waking up to a job you love, celebrated journalist Bob Woodward said during his commencement speech on Sunday.

Woodward started the speech by asking the audience to provide a standing round of applause to those who financed the 820 graduates’ educations, which cost approximately $200 million over the past four years.

“It is the best capital investment that has ever been made,” Woodward said.

Woodward instructed graduates to “decide carefully who [they] are going to work with.” He shared his experiences from critical points in his career, especially Jan. 1973 when he, along with Carl Bernstein, was struggling as a young journalist to put together the pieces of the Watergate puzzle. A colleague, Katherine Graham, made the difference. “I was blown away by what she knew. She had a mind on, hands off policy” that inspired him, Woodward said.

“‘Never tell me never,’ she said. I came out a motivated employee,” Woodward joked. Graham encouraged him to use resources available through the Post and helped him realize that they had an obligation to find out what had happened. (read full article )
