What is Sorority Recruitment?

Membership in a fraternity or sorority is one of the many outstanding ways to become involved at Bucknell. Joining a Greek organization is an excellent way to meet people, incorporate yourself into campus life, develop leadership skills, contribute to the Lewisburg community, and establish lifelong friendships. You will grow as a person by joining a Greek organization.

Recruitment is an organized opportunity for women on our campus to learn more about Greek life, our different sororities, and our wonderful members. It is a week to meet new people, be entertained, and to laugh and have fun! Recruitment gives you the opportunity to ask questions about our organizations and the commitments as well as make new friends and memories. During the Recruitment period you will be assigned to a Gamma Chi and a Gamma Chi group to help make Recruitment even more enjoyable.

During the Recruitment period, sororities will have the opportunity to invite potential new members to different events, and potential new members will have to opportunity to select which sororities they would also like to visit again, and through this process of "mutual selection" you may be invited into a sorority. Even if you decide not to join, you will have already made friends in your Gamma Chi group and in each of the different sororities!

Formal Recruitment is structured with a specific procedure that all participating sororities are required to follow. There is a pre-set number of "parties" that last for equal (and very specific) lengths of time. There are also designated rounds in Formal Recruitment, with the themes, times, and number of parties changing with each round. In short, it's considered formal because outside of Formal Recruitment, sororities may participate in "informal recruitment" where there is very little structure and the logistics of recruiting new members is left up to the individual chapters.
