Resolution Regarding the Use of Alcohol Beverages

WHEREAS, members of the Bucknell Community are concerned that the excessive use of alcohol beverages is a pervasive problem on campus, as it is in modern society at large; and

WHEREAS, it is our firm belief that the excessive use of alcohol beverages is contrary to the goals of fraternity membership, has a negative influence on the academic performance of many undergraduate students, is detrimental to the efficient operation of our undergraduate fraternity chapters, leads to unnecessary and excessive wear and damage to fraternity chapter houses, is illegal for those members under the age of 21, and increases the risk of injury to undergraduate fraternity members and others;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Alumni Greek Council of Bucknell University that we condemn the excessive use of alcohol beverages and activities within fraternity chapter houses that encourage the excessive use of alcohol beverages.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we call on the University, the undergraduate Interfraternity Council and all undergraduate fraternity chapters to work together toward implementing a system which de-emphasizes the excessive use of alcohol beverages; promotes responsible and lawful drinking habits; limits access to alcohol beverages by those under the legal drinking age; restricts activities likely to lead to the excessive use of alcohol beverages; and in all other ways conforms to applicable University, local and Commonwealth laws, regulations and ordinances.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we strongly urge each alumni corporation to adopt such resolutions and take such actions as may be appropriate to assist its undergraduate chapter in furthering the intent of this Resolution.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the officers of the Alumni Greek Council shall disseminate a letter setting forth the substance of this Resolution to The Bucknellian, to each officer of the undergraduate Interfraternity Council, and to the president of each undergraduate fraternity chapter with a request that it be read to the membership of the fraternity chapter at the next regularly scheduled chapter meeting.

Resolved, this 19th Day of November, 1988
