Alumni Greek Council Resolution On Risk Management
Adopted: November 9, 1991
WHEREAS, the Alumni Greek Council at Bucknell University is dedicated to the improvement and perpetuation of the Fraternity and Sorority System at Bucknell, and
WHEREAS, the litigious nature of today’s society causes Risk Management issues to continue to pose a major threat to the operational integrity of individual chapters and of our Greek System, and
WHEREAS, the Alumni Greek Council has for several years clearly expressed our concern that Fraternities have for too long been forced to be the center of social activity at Bucknell, irregardless of the liability and risk that such responsibility entails, and
WHEREAS, there us a clear perception that the ability to host we--received social functions is important to the success of any chapter, and this ability is closely tied to the use and/or abuse of alcohol, and
WHEREAS, many of our chapters are members of the Fraternity Insurance Purchasing Group (FIPG), a risk management consortium which closely regulates the manner and method whereby any chapter uses or serves alcohol at any social function, and other of our chapters have similar guidelines which must be followed, and
WHEREAS, fraternity chapters can no longer afford the financial costs and liability risks of hosting social functions where free alcoholic beverages are provided to guests, and
WHEREAS, there is an understandable concern that all Greek organizations be required to operate with similar restrictions regarding their ability to host social events, in order to maintain an equitable system, and
WHEREAS, Bucknell’s Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council have both separately drafted and approved policies on risk management which take these concerns to heart,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Alumni Greek Council of Bucknell University offers our endorsement and support of the risk management policies established by Bucknell’s IFC and PHC, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we will work together to encourage our individual chapters to comply with these regulations, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we as an organization pledge that we cannot and will not tolerate violations of the policies established by the IFC, PHC, University, or our respective national organizations.
RESOLVED this NINTH day of NOVEMBER, 1991, at Bucknell University.
