Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra

FRIDAY, MARCH 28
8 pm | $20

A concert jazz orchestra steeped in the history of jazz but infused with the progressive spirit and harmonies of today, DIVA’s unique sound is a result of a repertory composed and arrangedexpressly for the individual personalities of the musicians. DIVA was founded by Stanley Kay, a former manager and relief drummer for the Buddy Rich Big Band, who was working with Sherrie Maricle and, impressed by her skill, started seeking other women musicians of a similar caliber. Since 1993, DIVA has performed all over the world in a variety of venues including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Teatro de Sistina in Rome, SS Norway and Queen Elizabeth II Jazz Cruises, the jazz festivals of Berlin, Bern, Salzburg, Montréal, Ottawa, Jamaica, Bogata, Zagreb, and Pori, Finland, to name a few.

Sherrie Maricle, Ph.D., coordinates successes as a jazz artist, music director, teacher, and composer in much the same way that a jazz drummer coordinates all four limbs at once. She not only leads DIVA and her quintet, Five Play, she performs with the New York Pops and is that orchestra’s director of education. She works with Broadway star Maurice Hines, teaches, is an active clinician for numerous percussion companies, and is a busy freelance performer and published composer and arranger in both classical and jazz music.
