Jasmine Guy in Raisin' Cane featuring the Avery Sharpe Trio

A one-woman tour de force, Raisin’ Cane, which premiered at the famed Apollo Theatre in New York City in February 2007, presents in words, music, and visuals a celebration of the creative ferment and cultural growth of the 20s and 30s that became widely known as the Harlem Renaissance. The period’s literary lights included Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neal Hurston, and many others whose influence is woven into the show’s text, as well as the original score by the acclaimed jazz bassist Avery Sharpe.

Jasmine Guy is known from her portrayals of Velma Kelly in Chicago on Broadway, Whitley in NBC’s A Different World, Roxy in the Showtime series Dead Like Me, and appearances in movies, on and off-Broadway, and with the world-renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Company. Celebrated as an actress, dancer, singer, producer / director, lecturer, and arts and social services advocate, she includes the role of wife and mother in her long list of credits.
