American Brass Quintet with Billy Childs
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 8 pm | $20 Billy Childs, piano, composer Since 1960, the American Brass Quintet, “the Rolls Royce of brass quintets” (Baltimore Sun), has maintained an unparalleled reputation for musical subtlety and quicksilver virtuosity not usually assumed outside the rarified realms of string quartets. Exceptional performances feature repertory ranging from its own definitive editions of Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces to significant contemporary works. The quintet is ensemble-in-residence at the Juilliard School and Aspen Music Festival. With the support of the New York State Music Fund, administered by Rockefeller Philanthropies, the ABQ this year has commissioned a substantial work for brass quintet and piano from Grammy Award-winning West Coast pianist and composer Billy Childs. The new work will be premiered in the fall at venues in New York state and the Juilliard School in New York City before its Pennsylvania premiere at this concert. Billy Childs will kick off the associated residency on campus as the featured guest piano soloist for a Jazz at Bucknell First Wednesdays series concert in Bucknell Hall at 8:30 p.m. on November 7. In addition to his numerous compositional commissions, Billy Childs is a wellknown jazz soloist who has also collaborated with jazz greats including Chick Corea, Dianne Reeves, Wynton Marsalis, and Chris Botti.
