LEWISBURG, Pa. – With the admissions season now concluded, Bucknell has announced that a near record number of students applied to be admitted to the University's Class of 2011.
But while the application pool of 8,945 was the second highest in University history, down less than 1 percent from a record 9,021 applicants for the Class of 2010, the actual enrolled size Bucknell's newest class is expected to remain at about 900 seats, a level that has been largely unchanged in recent years.
In the past decade, enrollment for the incoming class has ranged from 889 to 953. (See graphic of applications versus class size for the past decade. Also, see Class of 2011 profile.)
Among most selective
"This year's admissions process was among the most selective in the University's history," said Kurt Thiede, vice president for enrollment management and dean of admissions at Bucknell. "Academically, the Class of 2011 is one of the strongest on record."
Offers of admission were extended to just 2,675 students, or 30 percent of those applying. That is down from 33 percent a year earlier and makes Bucknell one of the most selective schools in the United States and among the top 4 percent of the most selective schools in the nation.
Academically, 81 percent of the admitted students in the Class of 2011 were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduation class, little changed from last year's 82 percent, while 94 percent were in the top 20 percent of their class, also little changed from latest year's 95 percent.
49 percent women
Of those offered admission, 51 percent were men and 49 percent women.
Geographically, the Class of 2011 is a diverse group. The admitted applicant group represents 42 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. In addition, 58 countries are represented.
Enrolled profile data for the Class of 2011 will be available in the fall.
