"Elliptic Curves: New Ways of Solving Old Problems", Nathan Ryan (Bucknell University)
Abstract: Elliptic curves are objects studied by many number theorists (of which I am one). In this talk I will start by giving a number of applications of elliptic curves (to art, to cryptography, etc) and will continue by describing the role that they play in a one thousand year old unsolved problem.
