Why Bucknell?
“I spent most of my life in Singapore and always wanted to come to college in America. Bucknell University has a great reputation, and the management program is one of the best in the country. I came in as a management major and decided to stick with it after taking just one course, Management 101.”
A hands-on experience
“Bucknell definitely has a great management program. They offer coursework that is so different from other schools – it’s all very hands-on. For example, when you take courses like Management 101 (which is a popular course even for non-management majors), you are assigned to a “company” and given a position within it. Throughout the semester, students learn how to work with people and how to manage money. It’s not just lecture-based, which I think helps you learn better. I got to know every single student in my company through my position as a Scheduling and Time Budgeting Manager. Each company was given the responsibility to use a loan to complete a business project, and the profits were used to fund a service project. It was a great learning experience, one of the best I have had at Bucknell so far.”
Leadership training
“Through the Institute of Leadership for Technology and Management (ILTM) program, I had six weeks of intensive classroom and hands-on instruction in subjects relating to my major, such as ethics, leadership, and teamwork. It is a very selective program – only 10 students each from the business management and engineering majors and four liberal arts students are chosen to participate. Outside executives and community leaders were brought in to talk about a variety of topics. We were put in charge of projects for real companies like Geisinger Medical Center, General Electric, IAC Interactive Corp., and AmerisourceBergen. Each company created a 'problem' and each ILTM team was tasked with coming up with recommendations for solutions. I felt really privileged to be part of that program. It was really intensive, but really rewarding, too.”
The chance to dance
“I love to dance as a hobby, but I never had a chance as part of school before. However, I found a performance group at Bucknell called the Latino Dance Corner. This is a great group of people who just enjoy dancing the various dances such as salsa, cha-cha, and samba. The club started during my first year at Bucknell, and I’ve been privileged to perform for many different campus events. The highlight is definitely our annual showcase in the spring, which features our talented dancers and generates more student interest in these types of dancing. I never would have imagined performing in front of an audience before, but through this club I found a love for it.”
Building on Foundations
“I think what helped me most with adjusting to being away from home was getting involved during my first year. It helped that I was able to take advantage of programs such as the pre-orientation program called Building on Foundations (BOF), which brought together 50 students a few days before orientation started. We spent three days at Cowan, a Bucknell off-campus retreat center, where we got to spend time with student counselors and each other. It was a time to ask questions, express concerns, and just get to know each other. Some of my best friends are the ones I met during BOF.”
