"Even though Bucknell is a liberal arts school, undergraduate research is highly encouraged and makes for a terrific learning environment."

International relations and mechanical engineering major: Kolkata, India

Why Bucknell?

"The welcoming attitude and personal conversations with the admissions counselors led to Bucknell. My goal of pursuing an engineering education with a strong liberal arts background strengthened my reasons to be a part of the Bucknell family. I fell in love with Lewisburg when I came here. It's a beautiful town where life is less stressful."

Academic Adventures

"I came here as a mechanical engineer, but Bucknell opened various doors to diversify my educational experience. From studying modern art history to writing about films, my interests have slowly moved toward international affairs, and I am pursuing both majors.

"The efforts of the warm and friendly faculty have made the mechanical engineering department a very close-knit community. I know that engineers aren't unconcerned about everything else going on in non-engineering world. A summer course in Argentina with the College of Engineering taught me a great deal about the subject in a global context and reinforced the importance of being culturally aware in today's world.

"Since my sophomore year, I have worked on a research project to design and fabricate an aquatic robot, which has been a complete learning experience. Even though Bucknell is a liberal arts school, undergraduate research is highly encouraged and makes for a terrific learning environment."

Campus Activities

"Despite all the academic work, everyone here still finds free time for other activities. Bucknell is all about meeting new people and being part of novel experiences. I've been a campus tour guide with the admissions office since my first year and a volunteer tutoring elementary school kids in a program called Bucknell Buddies. I am also a contributing writer for the student newspaper. Currently, I serve as a resident assistant on a first-year residence hall and I was a Junior Fellow with the Society and Technology Residential College my sophomore year.

"I am also involved in several cultural organizations, including serving as a treasurer of the South Asian Students' Association. I have also been serving on the ISR Student Advisory Board to make technology-related changes on campus. Last year, I was involved as a lab teaching assistant with the engineering department. I also work as a technology support consultant on campus, helping to fix people’s computer and network problems. I hope to take advantage of all that I have learned here, and apply it to other environments."
