About the Writing Program
At Bucknell, writing instruction takes place in writing-intensive courses offered at all levels in all disciplines. W1 courses offer a general introduction to college writing, while W2 course, allow students to practice rhetorical conventions in particular disciplines. All Bucknell undergraduate students must successfully complete one W1 course and two W2 courses before graduating.
Complete Description of Bucknell's Writing Requirement
The Writing Program is administered by the Composition Council, a subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction. The council's voting membership consists of six faculty members representing all divisions of the university and a representative from ISR. One associate dean from each college and the director of the Writing Center serve as ex-officio, non-voting members. The council meets regularly to evaluate W course proposals and to discuss policy relating to the Writing Program.
M. Lynn Breyfogle, lynn.breyfogle@bucknell.edu, Associate Professor of Mathematics, is Director of the Writing Program.
Deirdre O'Connor, oconnord@bucknell.edu, Writing and Teaching Consultant, is Director of the Writing Center.
Those who are interested in the history, administration and rationale of the Writing Program are welcome to read the original Writing Program Legislation (in PDF Format). Some modifications were made to the legislation in response to an internal review conducted in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years. The Complete Description of Bucknell's Writing Requirement reflects these changes.
Faculty members wishing to propose a new W course can complete and submit proposal forms online. The proposal will be forwarded to the Composition Council and Writing Program Director for review.
