Graduate Admission and Degree Requirements

In addition to the general requirements for admission to Bucknell's graduate studies program, there are specific admission and degree requirements for graduate study in English.

Requirements for Admission to the Graduate Program in English

An undergraduate English major is strongly recommended. Writing sample and general GRE test results are required and subject GRE test is desirable. We encourage personal interviews.

Requirements for Obtaining a Master of Arts Degree in English

The requirements for a degree are

  • Eight courses, three of the eight courses as follows: Introduction to Graduate Studies (ENGL 600), a course in literary theory, and the thesis workshop or a seminar in creative writing. Two of the eight courses may be taken outside the department with permission of the adviser;
  • A master's thesis proposal, submitted in November of the second year;
  • A master's thesis and an oral examination;
  • Intermediate reading proficiency in a foreign language to be determined by testing or by four courses in a foreign language, two of which must be university courses at the intermediate level.
