Bucknell's oldest alumna celebrates 108th birthday

Bucknellians helped Ellen Peterson Williams, center, to celebrate her 108th birthday Monday, Oct. 29.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- She's Bucknell University's oldest living alumna and on Monday, Oct. 29, Ellen Peterson Williams, Class of 1919, celebrated her 108th birthday.

Joining Williams for a celebration at her Williamsport, Pa., nursing home were Bucknell students, alumni, and staff, as well as many long-time friends.

The Bucknell contingent surprised Williams with a birthday cake and a personal invitation to the University's annual Christmas Candlelight Service at Rooke Chapel in December.

Proclamation from president
Williams also was presented with a proclamation from Bucknell President Brian C. Mitchell, verifying her as the University's oldest living alumna, and a scarf illustrated with a Bucknell campus scene.

Williams, a music major, still proudly wears the medallion she was given at her 1919 graduation.

Her advice to her undergraduate visitors, who serenaded Williams with the University's alma mater and a few choruses of "Happy Birthday," was to "stay young."
