Just a cold...or mononucleosis?

For Lauren Neff '10, the semester started with constant fatigue, quite a few missed classes and a desire to stay in bed and sleep all the time. But she is not the only one.

With approximately 105 students tested for mono at Student Health Services since September, the disease has made its presence known on campus.

Similar to the common flu, symptoms of mono include sore throat, fever, extreme fatigue, swollen lymph nodes as well as an enlarged liver and spleen.

"Mono is a droplet infection that is spread by close contact," director of Student Health Services Don Stechschulte said. "On this campus, it's not a question of whether you are being exposed, but in what condition [your immune system is] when you are exposed.

Mono is contagious and can spread through sharing saliva or mucous. Sleep deprivation, alongside a poor diet and stress, create optimal conditions for a mono infection.

Mononucleosis infections are most often caused by the Epstein-Barr (EBV) virus. According to fda.gov, 50 percent of children become infected by EBV before the age of five, but most don't show symptoms of an infection.   (read full article)
