Despite the unusual characteristics of a criminal trespassing incident at Carey House early in the morning of Nov. 17, Jason Friedberg, chief of public safety, reassures students the perpetrator does not pose a threat to the safety of the campus community.
According to the report sent to the campus in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, a middle-aged white male followed a female student into Carey House at approximately 12:15 a.m. and continued down the hallway. The student believed the man was a parent of another resident and she remained in the house lounge until 2:00 a.m. when she returned to her room.
When she entered her unlocked room, she saw the man from earlier sitting in a chair. He immediately jumped up and ran out of the room and the building. Nothing was taken from her room and there are no suspects in the case.
Due to the ongoing investigation, Public Safety will not release any further details.
“There is nothing to worry about,” Friedberg said. The perpetrator did not threaten, harm or steal anything during the two hours he occupied Carey House, located on the corner of Sixth Street and St. George Street. “If he was intending to do something, he would have,” Friedberg said.
Public Safety, though, did increase the presence of foot and bike patrols around Carey House that night. (read full article)
