The Board of Trustees has approved a tuition increase of 3.95 percent and a comprehensive fee increase of 4.75 percent.

Tuition for the class of 2009 will be increased to $37,844, making their comprehensive fee $46,790. The classes of 2010, 2011 and 2012 will pay $39,434 for tuition and a comprehensive fee of $48,380.

The class’ difference in tuition remains due to a two-tiered fee strategy developed in the fall semester of 2005 by the Planning and Budgeting committee, said David Surgala, vice president for finance and administration.

“For the 2006-2007 school year, we increased the comprehensive fee 9.35 percent for the entering class and 4.95 percent for the continuing classes knowing that in three years, people would graduate, and everyone would then be on the same fee,” Surgala said.

“Students on the committee said ‘we’re not going to be here to take advantage of benefits from the tuition increase, so let’s start with the new class who would.’”

Fees have continued to increase over the years because the University was generating fewer resources per student than other institutions in its peer group, Surgala said.

Though the University has the highest tuition fee among its peer schools such as Lafayette and Lehigh, it has the seventh highest comprehensive fee in the group of 13 schools.

“We’re in the middle of the pack, trying hard to temper increases of the comprehensive fee,” Surgala said. “The challenge here involves expenses related to higher education like salaries, health care benefits, building maintenance. Those are going up a little more than what we try to hold tuition and the comprehensive fee to.” (read full article)
