The University took its first steps towards potential downtown development this week with a survey of two Market Streetproperties. The possibility of moving campus facilities downtown stems from the strategic plan and the “Building Bridges” objective.

Wednesday’s surveys of 400 Market Street and 416 Market Street are to determine whether the buildings will be suitable for intended uses, such as a University bookstore, administrative office buildings and retail space for local businesses. A multi-level, structured parking facility may also be considered if needed. Infrastructure, historical background and architecture of the buildings are all considered. Agreements will be made with building owners if the University decides to purchase the properties.

Charles Pollock, vice president for external relations, believes the developments will benefit both the University and Lewisburg.

“They create a really exciting and positive feedback loop by assuring and advancing the well-being, the vibrancy and the economic health of downtown Lewisburg,” he said. “As Bucknell prospers, it’s able to do more good for Lewisburg.”

Pollock said moving University properties downtown could only support the businesses more than before. A bookstore downtown would have longer hours and more inventory, drawing even more students to Market Street businesses. Due to the early phases of development, it has not been decided whether a “satellite” store would remain on campus.

The people working in the new potential office spaces could utilize downtown restaurants for lunch and shop downtown more often. A thriving downtown economy, according to Pollock, may even attract new businesses and private developers. He also believes that growth and stability downtown will help the University recruit students and faculty.

Pollock also discussed more long-term plans for a new regional arts center to incorporate into the existing Campus Theater. It would have more focus on the visual arts and would be more accessible than the Samek Art Gallery because of its downtown location (read full article)
